Description
SiliconePlus manufactures custom LSR overmolded metal pin components for projects that require electrical insulation, local sealing, soft protection or controlled contact areas.
Liquid silicone rubber is molded directly around a selected section of the metal pin, terminal, electrode or precision insert. The exposed metal area, silicone coverage boundary and final geometry are produced according to the customer’s drawing and assembly requirements.
These are custom insert-molded components rather than standard silicone caps. Each project is evaluated according to the metal material, surface condition, insert geometry, silicone hardness, dimensional tolerance and end-use environment.
A separately assembled silicone sleeve may move, rotate or become displaced during installation. Direct silicone over metal molding can integrate the soft silicone area with the metal insert and reduce the number of loose assembly components.
The silicone section can be designed to cover only the required functional area while leaving electrical contact, threaded, welding or positioning surfaces exposed.
Depending on the structure, the silicone may provide insulation, cushioning, localized sealing, controlled contact, surface protection or an assembly locating feature.
Critical Design Requirements
Insert Position Control
The mold must hold the metal pin securely so that its exposed length, angle and position remain stable during LSR injection.
Coverage Boundary
The silicone termination line should avoid electrical contacts, welding zones, threads and other functional metal surfaces.
Bonding Structure
Mechanical locking features, metal surface condition and the selected silicone material should be evaluated before tooling.
Flash Control
Parting lines, shut-off areas and insert clearances must be designed to limit silicone flash around small metal features.

Custom Coverage and Retention Structures
Custom silicone overmolding parts can use different retention structures depending on the available metal geometry and the required product performance.
Possible structures include local silicone tips, circumferential insulation bands, sealing collars, protective boots, flexible contact areas and silicone sections formed through holes or around undercuts.
Before mold development, the metal insert should be reviewed for dimensional stability, coating condition, handling method, locating surfaces and areas that must remain free of silicone.
Typical Applications
Electronic Terminals
Used for small terminals, conductive contacts and precision metal inserts requiring localized insulation or protection.
Automotive Components
Automotive silicone overmolding can be applied to connector pins, sensing terminals and metal inserts exposed to vibration or moisture.
Medical Electrodes
Suitable for custom electrode rings, conductive contacts and metal components requiring a soft silicone interface.
Industrial Probes
Used for inspection probes, sensing pins, guide pins and precision metal components requiring protected contact areas.
Information Required Before Tooling
Please provide the metal pin drawing, 3D model or physical sample together with the required silicone coverage area.
The project information should identify the metal material, surface coating, dimensions that must remain exposed, silicone hardness, operating environment, assembly method and estimated production quantity.
Our engineering team will review insert positioning, mold shut-off areas, silicone flow, demolding direction, bonding structure and inspection requirements before tooling begins.
FAQ About Silicone Overmolded Metal Pins
Can silicone be molded onto very small metal pins?
Yes. Feasibility depends on the pin diameter, insert rigidity, locating area, silicone coverage and mold shut-off structure.
Can part of the metal surface remain exposed?
Yes. The mold can be designed to cover only selected areas while keeping contacts, threads, welding sections or positioning surfaces exposed.
Is adhesive always required?
Not necessarily. The project may use mechanical retention, material adhesion or a combination of both, depending on the metal and product structure.
Can you manufacture from an existing sample?
Yes. Drawings are preferred, but a physical sample can also be used for initial project evaluation.
What should we send for a quotation?
Send the 2D drawing, 3D file or sample, metal material, silicone requirements, target quantity and application information.
